WLMK Nominations

William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professorship

The William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professorship in Canadian Studies was created at Harvard University in 1967 through generous gifts received as a result of a campaign led by David Rockefeller. The WLMK Endowment enables Harvard to regularly invite eminent scholars engaged in the study of Canada, preferably in the social sciences or humanities, to teach at the University and organize a colloquium, for one year. WLMK Professors may be appointed by any department or school of the University and must be in residence in Cambridge for the year of their appointment.

Members of the Canada Program Faculty Committee may make a nomination on behalf of their own department or another department by submitting a candidate’s CV, statement of research interests, and a nomination letter which highlights the candidate’s accomplishments and what contributions they would make to the department and the Canada Program. While it is not required that the letter come from a Dean or a Chair, it is recommended that department chairs be consulted to ensure a commitment to make the academic appointment and approve and offer courses to be taught by the nominee. Chairs of Harvard departments are invited to make nominations. And the Chair of the Faculty Committee may solicit nominations from previous WLMK Visiting Professors.

Because of the need to coordinate with departments, nominations should be made well in advance of the intended visit, typically two years ahead of time. In 2026-27, the Committee will consider nominations for visits beginning as early as Fall 2027 and as late as Fall 2029. Nominee CVs, research statements (max. 3 pages), and nomination letters should be sent to Canada@wcfia.harvard.edu. CVs and research statements may be submitted directly by the nominee or the nominator; nomination letters should be submitted directly by the recommender. The deadline for submission is January 15th.
